In-Person Psychotherapy for Collingwood & Surrounding Areas & Virtual Across Ontario
Children don't always have the words to explain what they are feeling or experiencing. They may show us through their play, behaviour, emotions, or relationships instead. Play therapy gives children a safe and age-appropriate way to express themselves, explore difficult experiences, and develop new ways of coping.
Through play, children can communicate things they may not yet be able to put into words. Therapy can also help children make sense of their emotions, build confidence, and feel more capable of navigating the challenges they are facing.
Play-based approaches may help children:
Play therapy isn't simply “playing with a therapist.” The activities and play we use are intentional and guided by your child's developmental needs and therapeutic goals.
Depending on your child's age and needs, sessions may include creative activities, games, drawing, storytelling, imaginative play, movement, or other hands-on approaches. These give us opportunities to explore emotions, relationships, coping skills, and experiences in ways that feel engaging and accessible.
For younger children especially, therapy may look quite different from adult therapy. Rather than expecting a child to sit and talk about their feelings, we meet them where they are and use play as a pathway to connection, communication, and therapeutic work.
Parents and caregivers are also an important part of the process. When appropriate, we may discuss what you are noticing at home, provide strategies to support your child, and work together to help create lasting change beyond the therapy room.
