In-Person Psychotherapy for Collingwood & Surrounding Areas & Virtual Across Ontario
We all have different parts of ourselves that show up in different situations. One part of you may want to feel in control, while another feels overwhelmed. You may find yourself wanting to speak up but holding back, or knowing something logically while another part of you feels afraid.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an approach that helps us understand these different parts of ourselves with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment. Instead of seeing these conflicting thoughts, emotions, or behaviours as something that is wrong with you, we can begin to understand what they may be trying to do for you.
In therapy, we may use IFS techniques to help you:
IFS involves getting curious about the different parts of yourself and the roles they play. Together, we may explore a part that feels anxious, critical, angry, overwhelmed, avoidant, or responsible, and begin to understand what it is trying to protect or accomplish.
This doesn't mean that every thought or feeling represents a separate “part” of you. Rather, parts are a way of understanding the different patterns, emotions, and responses that can arise within us.
Through this work, we can begin to approach these parts with greater compassion and curiosity, rather than fighting against or trying to get rid of them. Over time, this can create more flexibility and choice in how you respond.
At Northern Sky Psychotherapy, IFS techniques may be incorporated into an integrative approach when they fit your needs and goals. The goal is to better understand yourself, develop compassion for the different parts of your experience, and create greater internal balance.
