In-Person Psychotherapy for Collingwood & Surrounding Areas & Virtual Across Ontario
Sometimes, we don't realize how much our past experiences are influencing the way we feel, think, and respond today. You may find yourself reacting strongly to certain situations, struggling to trust, feeling on edge, avoiding certain experiences, or responding in ways that don't seem to match what is happening in the moment.
Often, these responses developed for a reason. They may have once helped you cope with something difficult, but can continue long after the original experience has passed.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that can help you process distressing or traumatic experiences that may still be affecting you in the present. It can help make sense of the connection between what you've experienced and how you're responding today, while creating space for new, more adaptive ways of responding.
EMDR may help you:
EMDR begins with understanding your experiences and your history. Together, we briefly explore themes, patterns, and experiences that may be connected to how you think, feel, and respond today. This helps us identify what may still feel unresolved and what we will focus on during processing.
Before processing begins, we establish a foundation of safety, stability, and emotional regulation, including strategies to help you navigate difficult emotions that may arise.
During EMDR processing, you will bring aspects of a distressing experience to mind while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating sounds or taps. Bilateral stimulation is proven to support the brain's information-processing systems, helping experiences that remain distressing become more integrated without becoming emotionally overwhelming.
In EMDR, you do not need to analyze every detail or consciously figure everything out. Instead, you are guided through a process that allows your brain to make new connections and update how the experience is stored and experienced.
Processing can bring up strong emotions, physical sensations, memories, or difficult realizations. Your therapist will support you through these moments while helping you stay grounded and engaged in the process.
The goal is not to erase memories or change what happened, but to help you process what you've experienced so the past feels more like the past—and you have greater freedom to respond to the present.
