Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Understanding the Connection Between Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviours

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a practical, evidence-based approach that explores how our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours influence one another. Sometimes, the way we interpret a situation can contribute to difficult emotions or patterns of behaviour that leave us feeling stuck.

CBT can help you slow these patterns down, develop a deeper understanding of what is happening, and find more helpful ways of responding.

How CBT Can Help

In therapy, we may use CBT techniques to help you:

  • Identify unhelpful or recurring thought patterns
  • Notice how thoughts influence emotions and behaviours
  • Challenge thoughts that may be overly critical, rigid, or based on assumptions
  • Develop more balanced and compassionate perspectives
  • Build practical strategies for managing difficult emotions
  • Break patterns of avoidance or behaviours that may be keeping you stuck
  • Strengthen coping skills and confidence in navigating challenging situations

What to Expect in Therapy

At Northern Sky Psychotherapy, we draw from CBT techniques when they fit your needs and goals, integrating them with other therapeutic approaches.

Sometimes this may involve exploring a thought that keeps coming up, looking at the evidence for and against it, or considering whether there may be another way of understanding a situation. Other times, we may focus more on changing patterns of behaviour, building coping strategies, or gradually approaching something you have been avoiding.

The goal is not to simply “think positively” or convince yourself that everything is okay. Instead, CBT can help you develop a more flexible and realistic way of understanding yourself, your experiences, and the situations you are facing.
