Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Making Space for What Is, While Moving Toward What Matters

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps you develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Rather than spending all of your energy trying to control, avoid, or get rid of uncomfortable feelings, ACT focuses on making space for them while continuing to move toward what matters to you.

ACT recognizes that difficult thoughts and emotions are a natural part of being human. The goal isn't to feel good all the time, but to develop greater flexibility in how you respond when life feels difficult.

How ACT Can Help

In therapy, we may use ACT techniques to help you:

  • Develop greater awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours
  • Reduce the impact that difficult thoughts can have on your choices
  • Break patterns of avoidance or behaviours that keep you feeling stuck
  • Practice accepting emotions without allowing them to control your actions
  • Identify your values and what is genuinely important to you
  • Make meaningful choices that are aligned with the person you want to be
  • Develop greater self-compassion and psychological flexibility
  • Build confidence in moving forward even when difficult emotions are present

What to Expect in Therapy

ACT is not about learning to simply “accept” everything that happens or ignoring problems that need to be addressed. Instead, we explore what you can change, what may need to be accepted, and how you want to respond to both.

Together, we may explore patterns of avoidance, work on creating distance from unhelpful thoughts, clarify your values, or identify small steps toward the life and relationships you want to build.

At Northern Sky Psychotherapy, ACT techniques may be incorporated alongside other therapeutic approaches based on your needs and goals. The focus is on helping you become less controlled by difficult internal experiences and more able to make choices that reflect what matters most to you.
